Rivian didn’t just unveil its R2 platform at its latest launch event—there was also a surprise announcement for the R3 crossover. The R3 is Rivian’s smallest car to date, with a size comparable to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, rather than the larger SUVs that Rivian has previously released.
Naturally, the smaller R3 is expected to be less expensive. While Rivian hasn’t shared the exact price yet, they have mentioned that it will be more affordable than the R2, which is priced at $45,000. However, it will be a while before we see the R3 on the roads, as it will come after the R2, which isn’t slated for release until the first half of 2026.
The R3 shares a similar styling to other Rivian vehicles but is designed as a hatchback. It features the familiar oval headlights at the front and, unlike most hatchbacks, has a lift-up rear glass at the back.
Various configurations of the R3 will be available, including single-motor, dual-motor, and tri-motor drivetrains. Rivian has also introduced a performance variant called the R3X. This model has a slightly wider stance and includes the tri-motor setup, resembling a rally car. However, the exact performance details have not been disclosed yet.
The pricing and timing of the R3’s release could determine Rivian’s standing as a significant player in the EV market. Currently, the EV market in the U.S. is dominated by the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. If the R3 can match their price points while offering Rivian’s signature sportiness and utility, it could elevate the competition in the EV space.
Given the rapid pace of EV development, it’s hard to predict the market landscape by the time the R3 is available. The R3 isn’t expected to be released until at least the second half of 2026, and more likely in 2027 or later. Unlike the Rivian R2, which can be reserved now, the R3 is not yet available for reservations.
