Ram is stepping into the electric vehicle market and bringing back the Ramcharger name with their new 2025 models. They’ve introduced the 2025 Ram 1500 and the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, a plug-in hybrid boasting what Ram calls “unlimited battery electric range.”

Unlike competitors such as the fully-electric Ford F-150 Lightning and the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the Ram 1500 Ramcharger is a plug-in hybrid. This means it combines an electric motor and battery with a traditional gas tank and engine. This design might be a clever strategy, as fully electric trucks often struggle with towing and hauling heavy loads. With the hybrid setup, the Ramcharger can run on electric power when lightly loaded and switch to the gas engine for more demanding tasks. This makes it an attractive option for truck owners who occasionally need extra power but also want to save on fuel and reduce their environmental impact during everyday driving.

The truck’s design is innovative. Instead of simply switching between the electric motor and the gas engine, the truck uses a generator to charge the battery or power the electric motors directly. This ensures a quick electric response whenever needed. While this approach doesn’t necessarily improve fuel efficiency more than other hybrids, it does enhance overall performance.

Ram states the truck is equipped with a 92-kilowatt-hour battery pack and an onboard 130kW generator, delivering power to a 250kW front motor and a 238kW rear motor. This combination enables the truck to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, thanks to its 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque.

Despite the truck’s advanced features, the marketing pitch might be a bit misleading. In a market where range and charging speed are significant factors for consumers, calling it “unlimited electric range” isn’t quite accurate. The truck still needs to be charged or refueled and can’t run indefinitely without power sources. Ram claims a range of up to 690 miles, factoring in the use of the generator.

However, Ram hasn’t provided details on the all-electric range of the battery on a single charge. They do mention that it can gain 50 miles of electric range in about 10 minutes using the maximum charging speed of 145kW. It’s not clear if the truck can operate solely on electric power, though it’s likely.

There are still some unanswered questions about the truck, such as its price and availability. Customers interested in the truck can reserve a spot to preorder it.

Beyond the powertrain, the truck features a modern interior with a 14.5-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.25-inch passenger screen for added comfort. It also includes a premium Klipsch audio system with 23 speakers, including a 12-inch subwoofer and two one-inch titanium dome tweeters, offering an impressive audio experience.
