Electric SUVs usually come with a hefty price tag. While there are some notable options available, if you are looking for something bigger than a midsize crossover like the Tesla Model Y or Kia EV6, be prepared to spend a significant amount of money. However, an upcoming EV might change the game in the accessible electric SUV market — the Kia EV9.
After a flashy debut, over a year filled with speculation, and more detailed updates, the Kia EV9 is finally set to arrive. This EV might not be the best of the year, but it’s definitely the one I’m most eager to see. In fact, it could be the first EV I purchase after holding off on buying an electric car so far.
There are already many excellent electric SUVs — if you’re willing to broaden your definition. Many vehicles labeled as SUVs are actually closer to crossovers. Top models in this category include the Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Ford Mustang Mach-E. On the higher end, there are the Tesla Model X and Mercedes EQS SUV.
However, these aren’t the typical SUVs Americans envision. Most are still five-seaters with a higher body and additional storage space. Yes, the Model Y and Model X can support up to seven seats, but those extra seats are cramped and significantly reduce the trunk space.
Then there are genuine electric SUVs, although they are less common. The Rivian R1S is an example, starting at $78,000 — a daunting figure, even though it offers a lot for the price.
Kia is well-positioned to tackle the challenge of providing a large, more affordable SUV. Why? Over the past five years, Kia has arguably been the most influential SUV manufacturer. The Kia Telluride continues to offer a high-quality SUV experience at a reasonable cost. Having reviewed several Tellurides, I’ve always been impressed by their driving feel and spaciousness, catering to the American love for big cars.
The hope is that the EV9 will carry over the best features of the Telluride. It appears this might be the case. The EV9 seems to combine the best aspects of the Telluride and the EV6, incorporating design elements and interior features from the Telluride, and the technical capabilities of the EV6.
Although the EV9 hasn’t been released yet, it’s expected to debut later this year. There are numerous photos and videos available, and some journalists have experienced it firsthand. If the EV9 can capture the appeal of the Telluride with the advanced technology of the EV6 at a reasonable price, it could significantly accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, especially in places like the U.S. where larger vehicles are more popular.
