Four Exciting Enhancements Elevate America's Top-Selling Plug-In Hybrid for 2024

I’m often amazed at how many people are taken aback when I tell them that the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the U.S. is the Jeep Wrangler. You’d think it would be a commuter car or a family SUV, but no, it’s a fun, off-road-ready Jeep. Even more surprisingly, the second-best-selling plug-in hybrid is the Grand Cherokee 4xe. It looks like Jeep is really onto something here.

In the first quarter of this year alone, 38% of all Wranglers sold were 4xe plug-in hybrids, and I expect the numbers to be even higher in the second quarter. This surge is largely due to aggressive federal and state tax incentives for plug-in hybrids. When you couple those incentives with a highly desirable vehicle, you have a recipe for success.

The Wrangler 4xe already had a lot going for it; I liked it so much that I bought the 2022 model. But after spending a day with the 2024 model, which boasts significant improvements and new features, I’m really tempted to upgrade.

One of the most noteworthy upgrades in the 2024 Wrangler is the new infotainment screen and dashboard redesign. While the screen, operating system, and dashboard of the 2019-2023 models had a rugged charm, they now look outdated compared to the sleek, modern 2024 version.

The highlight of the new interior is a 12.3-inch touchscreen that extends horizontally across the dashboard, integrating the instrument cluster into a cohesive cockpit design. Jeep added some subtle but effective updates to the dashboard textures and colors, enhancing the overall look. Additionally, the new design includes mounting points for a dash cam or GoPro, eliminating the need for adhesives or Velcro.

This new screen is not just bigger but also significantly better and more modern than the previous 8.4-inch display. The new system uses Uconnect 5, the latest software available across Stellantis vehicles, making the Wrangler feel as modern as any top-tier car.

Earlier versions of the system were just okay, mainly acting as a portal for media and basic vehicle functions with quick access to CarPlay or Android Auto. However, with Uconnect 5, the Wrangler now features a comprehensive car management system. The new home screen layout allows you to display and interact with two pieces of information simultaneously, such as navigation and media. You can also pin your favorite functions for quick access.

For the 4xe model, the hybrid-specific features let you monitor power usage, set charging schedules, and adjust hybrid drive mode settings. Despite its size, the screen is not overwhelming while driving. It’s easy to access, intuitive, and responsive. With features like full-array local dimming (FALD), the screen remains visible even under bright sunlight, making it ideal for driving with the top off.

Although the new tech is impressive, Jeep wisely retained physical buttons, knobs, and switches for essential functions like climate control, media, and vehicle operations, maintaining a balance between modernity and practicality.

Jeep also introduced a seven-microphone array to improve hands-free voice calls, addressing the noise issues that have always plagued the Wrangler at higher speeds. The new microphones and additional sound-deadening features like acoustic side glass and extra carpet insulation significantly reduce ambient noise.

In terms of driving dynamics, the 2024 Wrangler Rubicon X 4xe offers noticeable improvements despite retaining the same powertrain and battery as the 2022 model. The regenerative braking and e-save charging system have been calibrated for better performance. The regenerative braking, which uses the electric motor to slow down the car, is now much more aggressive, making it feel like you’re pressing the brake pedal halfway down when you release the gas. This system also helps recharge the battery more efficiently.

The “e-save charge” mode, which uses engine power to recharge the battery during normal driving, now operates at double the speed of previous models. This makes a significant difference on long drives, allowing you to see the battery percentage increase steadily.

The 2024 Wrangler also offers new interior options, including standard cloth seats and upgraded leather options, with power seats now available for the first time. The power seats are standard on the Rubicon X and High Altitude trims and are optional on the Sahara trim. These seats are designed to withstand the elements while offering improved adjustability.

Jeep has introduced a new accessory called the “Jeep Power Box,” which allows you to use the Wrangler 4xe’s battery to power household appliances through four 120V outlets and a USB-C port. This feature is a game-changer for camping, tailgating, or any outdoor activities that require power. Unfortunately, this feature is not compatible with older 4xe models but is included with the Sahara trim and above for the 2024 model.

Another modern touch is the integration of the radio antenna into the top of the windshield, replacing the old 35-inch metal whip antenna. This update modernizes the Wrangler further but may increase the cost of windshield replacements.

Safety features have also seen significant upgrades. All 2024 Wranglers now come with side-curtain airbags for both rows, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and load-limiters for rear passengers. These features, along with existing safety technology like parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alerts, blind spot detection, automatic emergency braking, a front-facing camera, and adaptive cruise control, bring the Wrangler in line with competing SUVs.

Despite the higher price tags, ranging from about $50,000 for the base model to over $70,000 for the Rubicon X with options, the Wrangler 4xe offers excellent value. Federal and state tax incentives can save buyers a significant amount of money, making this fun and versatile vehicle more accessible to more people. Plus, the resale value remains high, further enhancing its appeal.

With all these improvements and tax incentives, the 2024 Wrangler 4xe stands out as the best powertrain choice. It’s hard to imagine choosing anything else when shopping for a Wrangler.
