SUVs are super popular right now, and so are electric vehicles (EVs). It makes total sense that the Tesla Model Y is currently the best-selling car in the world. But it makes you wonder, is its popularity mainly because there aren’t many other large electric SUVs on the market?
Well, we’ll soon find out as several new electric SUVs are on the horizon. While this isn’t an exhaustive list, here are some upcoming electric SUVs that we’re most excited about.
First up is the Lucid Gravity. Based on the success of the Lucid Air, the Gravity has the potential to be even more impressive. Although details are still scarce, what we do know is that it will be a two-row SUV with an option for a third row, set to start production in late 2024. This means it won’t be widely available for a while. The Gravity is expected to feature the same luxurious interiors and advanced tech as the Air but in a larger vehicle. However, don’t expect it to be cheap. Lucid is following Tesla’s strategy of launching high-end models first, putting the Gravity in the same price range as the Tesla Model X. While we don’t have an exact price yet, it’s likely to be over $100,000.
If you’re in the market for something a bit more affordable, the EV9 could be right up your alley. Although it’s barely “upcoming,” since it’s already available in South Korea and will hit the U.S. market in the fourth quarter of 2023. The EV9 is essentially a bigger version of the highly-rated EV6, offering three rows of seats, accommodating either six or seven passengers. It boasts a large SUV design, expansive cargo space, and a higher ride. The car is expected to offer around 300 miles of range and supports super-fast 350kW charging.
For those seeking a truly budget-friendly option, the Chevrolet Equinox EV might be the one to watch. Expected to start at around $30,000, it combines a stylish design with a decent range. While the exact range hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s anticipated to reach up to 300 miles, putting it on par with some of the best electric cars out there.
Another exciting addition is the electric Ford Explorer, set to launch for the 2024 model year. This new model will feature five seats and a high-tech interior for less than $50,000. While specific details about its range and battery are still under wraps, it’s initially targeted for the European market. However, it’s likely to make its way to North America eventually, even if it takes a few years.
The Ioniq 7 is Hyundai’s larger counterpart to the Ioniq 5, much like the EV9 is to the EV6. This highly anticipated electric SUV will feature a unique design and three rows of seats, all built on the E-GMP platform, which gives the Ioniq 5 up to 300 miles of range. We’ll have to wait to see the exact range of the Ioniq 7 and if it truly lives up to Hyundai’s promise of a “living room on wheels.”
If luxury is more your style, then the Lotus Eletre might catch your interest. It’s a high-performance SUV designed for luxury and power. The top-spec R model boasts a whopping 905 horsepower and can accelerate to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds. Plus, it offers a maximum range of 373 miles.
For practicality, the Volvo EX90 is a strong contender. With seven seats, it’s a great option for larger families. It offers up to 300 miles of range, though you may have to get a higher-end model for that range. It also comes packed with tech features, including Volvo’s new advanced driver-assist system, which should enable highway self-driving capabilities.
