Imagine this: you’re out on a lake, rowing a boat and soaking up the sunshine. Then, out of nowhere, a Cybertruck floats by.
If Elon Musk’s vision comes to fruition, such a sight could be possible. The Tesla CEO recently mentioned on social media that they plan to offer a modification package enabling the Cybertruck to travel at least 100 meters on water like a boat. He noted that they mainly need to upgrade the cabin door seals to make this happen.
Considering that amphibious vehicles like the “Duck” bus exist, why not a Cybertruck?
Musk’s statement came after Lars Moravy, Tesla’s vice president of vehicle engineering, revealed to Jay Leno that Musk is interested in the Cybertruck having boat-like capabilities. Moravy suggested that some added buoyancy would be necessary and mentioned that an outboard motor could be plugged into the truck and controlled via its screen to go boating.
This isn’t the first time Musk has shown interest in making the Cybertruck water-compatible. More than a year before its official launch, he posted on social media that the Cybertruck would be waterproof enough to briefly function as a boat, allowing it to cross rivers, lakes, and calm seas.
However, it’s important to note that the current Cybertruck isn’t equipped for swimming. Owners should avoid driving their Cybertruck into water, as it will sink.
The Cybertruck’s unique and bold design already distinguishes it from other electric pickups, but if it gains the ability to float, it will stand out even more.
No specific timeline has been given for when we might see a Cybertruck that can traverse water. Considering that it took four years for the Cybertruck to go from its unveiling to its launch, this amphibious feature, if it ever becomes a reality, may still be some time away.
