Porsche has been involved in the electric vehicle market longer than many of its rivals and is now set to increase its offerings. In addition to the existing Porsche Taycan, the company has announced an electric version of the Macan. So, soon you’ll be able to buy an electric SUV from Porsche.
While many new electric cars are announced without clear release dates, the Macan Electric is scheduled to hit the market in the second half of 2024. This means that in less than a year, you’ll be able to purchase an electric Porsche SUV.
Wondering if the Porsche Macan Electric should be your next electric car? Here’s what we know so far. The design of the Porsche Macan Electric resembles the standard Porsche Macan, though it includes several distinctive features borrowed from the Taycan. The car maintains its crossover hatchback style but introduces a few changes for a modern touch.
At the front, the new Macan features Taycan-style Matrix headlights, discarding the rear spoiler for a smoother roofline. It retains the back light bar but opts for a flatter rear with slat-style taillights, giving it a fresher look. Overall, the Macan Electric updates the Macan’s design while preserving the beloved aesthetic.
More is known about the exterior than the interior of the Macan Electric, but there are some interior details available. The car includes LED accent lighting throughout and a “Communication Light” for driver alerts. The rest of the interior exudes luxury, with a bridge-like center console offering ample storage space. Additionally, there’s a front trunk providing 2.9 cubic feet of storage, complementing the 18 cubic feet available behind the second row of seats.
The dashboard features several displays for infotainment and instrument monitoring. You’ll find a 12.6-inch instrument cluster, a 10.9-inch touch display for infotainment, and a second 10.9-inch display for the passenger. The car will support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
The Porsche Macan Electric will come in two variants: the Macan 4 Electric and the Macan Turbo Electric. The base model, Macan 4 Electric, accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds with 383 horsepower. The Macan Turbo Electric offers a faster 0 to 60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and 576 horsepower.
Though it won’t be the quickest electric car on the market—that title belongs to the Tesla Model S Plaid—the Macan still boasts remarkable speed. For instance, the Porsche Taycan Turbo beats it with a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.4 seconds, but the Taycan is more of a sports car. The Macan Electric remains impressively fast.
The two models also differ slightly in their range. Porsche hasn’t released Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) range estimates yet, but according to the European-based Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), the Macan 4 Electric offers up to 613 kilometers (380 miles), while the Macan Turbo Electric offers up to 591 kilometers (367 miles). Keep in mind that WLTP ratings are typically higher than EPA ratings, so the actual EPA range may be lower when released.
Both models share the same charging speed capabilities. Thanks to the car’s 800-volt architecture, it supports charging speeds up to 270 kilowatts. While this isn’t as fast as some cars like the Kia EV6, which supports up to 350kW, it should enable the Macan to charge from 10% to 80% in about 21 minutes at compatible stations.
The Porsche Macan Electric will be less expensive than the $90,000 Porsche Taycan but still won’t come cheap. The starting price for the Macan 4 Electric will be $78,800, while the higher-spec Macan Turbo Electric will start at $105,300. Of course, various options will be available at launch, potentially increasing the final cost.
The introduction of the Macan Electric signifies Porsche’s deeper commitment to the electric vehicle market. The Taycan is already one of the most luxurious electric cars available, though not necessarily the most practical. The Macan offers a more practical option for those willing to invest in a premium electric vehicle.
