Dive Into Luxury on a Budget: The BMW i4 Outshines the Tesla Model S with Remarkable Affordability

The Tesla Model S was the pioneer in making electric cars look cool. It shattered the stereotype that EVs had to be geeky, tiny, and limited in range. Instead, it brought a stylish and sleek design paired with a modern interior. Over the years, however, competition has grown, and now the Model S faces some tough rivals. One of its main competitors is the BMW i4.

BMW has been excelling in the electric car arena, offering a variety of options. Their most budget-friendly electric vehicle right now is the BMW i4, starting at $52,200. Despite being more affordable, it still delivers the luxurious experience you would expect from a BMW, arguably even surpassing the Model S in terms of luxury. If luxury is what you’re after, the i4 is a compelling choice, even though it costs considerably less than the Model S.

When it comes to luxury, it’s all about the interior. The Tesla Model S has a nice interior, featuring a big display for infotainment and a smaller screen ahead of the steering wheel. It’s available in three interior colors: black, black-and-white, and cream. While the Model S interior looks premium, there’s still room for improvement.

On the other hand, the BMW i4 eDrive40 has a busier interior with more buttons and controls. While this may seem less modern, it makes them easier to use. The i4 features plush leather upholstery that’s not only very comfortable but also durable. The interior includes light wood trim and a black-and-white color scheme, adding to its appeal.

Personal preference plays a big role here. Admittedly, the Model S excels in technology, offering a larger screen and a superior infotainment system. Tesla’s focus on minimalism has its place; however, it sometimes takes things too far, making controls harder to manage and potentially less safe.

The industry seems divided on whether to follow Tesla’s minimalist approach. Some automakers are integrating climate controls into screens while keeping seat adjustments as physical controls. Others, like BMW, keep most controls separate from the screen, using it only for essential functions like maps and audio. In my view, controls used frequently should be kept separate, while those used occasionally can be integrated into the screen.

Neither BMW nor Tesla has perfected this balance, and very few companies have.

Ultimately, deciding whether the BMW i4 or the Tesla Model S is better is challenging. I’ve pointed out that the i4 is more luxurious, but the Model S justifies its higher price by offering better range, faster charging, and a superior infotainment system. It also provides a bit more space, making it a better electric vehicle overall.

However, if you’re looking for a luxurious sedan without spending as much as the Model S, the BMW i4 is an excellent choice and one of the best electric sedans in its price range.
