Google Expands Chrome Browser Accessibility to Vehicles and Enhances EV Features in Maps

Google is enhancing Android Auto and cars with built-in Google features, especially for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

For those using Android Auto from their connected phone, Google Maps is getting more EV-friendly updates. Starting with the Ford F-150 Lightning and Mach-E, you’ll now get information on your expected state of charge when you reach your destination, along with the locations of charging stations and expected charging times for longer trips. This feature has already been available for EVs with Google built-in (also known as Android Automotive), and I’ve found it incredibly useful for reducing charging anxiety. It’s excellent to see this feature being extended to Android Auto, making it accessible to many more users, and I hope it becomes available in more cars soon.

If your car has a Google built-in infotainment system, there are even more updates to look forward to. Google is introducing a beta version of the Chrome browser in cars, starting with Polestar and Volvo models. This means you can browse the internet while parked or charging, similar to a popular feature in Teslas. Additionally, Google is expanding its media offerings by including PBS Kids and Crunchyroll, and there’s a new weather experience from The Weather Channel that offers forecasts, alerts, and radar updates.

Moreover, Google is introducing a new “send to car” button in the Google Maps app on phones. This feature allows you to plan your trip before you leave and have the details ready when you get into your car. It’s another addition that enhances the built-in Google experience. More cars with Google built-in systems are on the way, with Nissan, Ford, and Lincoln planning to launch new models featuring this software suite in 2024.
