Tesla has just showcased the first Cybertruck to come off the production line at its new Gigafactory in Austin, Texas. The company shared a picture on Twitter of the all-electric truck surrounded by the team that contributed to its creation.
The Cybertruck’s production has been delayed by around two years, so seeing a fully assembled vehicle is a huge relief for early buyers who have been waiting patiently. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently promised a delivery event for the Cybertruck in the third quarter of this year, indicating it should occur by September. However, the company hasn’t provided any specific dates for the event yet.
The initial delivery will see the first Cybertrucks handed over to their new owners, but Tesla has indicated that large-scale production won’t start until 2024. The Cybertruck was unveiled in 2019, with the goal of beginning volume production by the end of 2021. Unfortunately, that timeline has been pushed back several times.
Reports suggest Tesla has received more than 1 million preorders for the Cybertruck, with interested customers making a refundable $100 deposit. The pricing details were taken down from Tesla’s website at the end of 2021. At that time, three different versions were offered, ranging from $39,900 to $69,900, based on features like the number of electric motors, towing capacity, and driving range. It’s generally expected that the final prices will be higher.
In April, Musk mentioned he had visited the Cybertruck production line in Austin, tweeting that it felt like the future and expressing his excitement. However, he did acknowledge back in 2021 that the Cybertruck’s unique design might mean there’s “some chance that Cybertruck will flop.”
Given the significant time and investment poured into the Cybertruck, the team pictured will undoubtedly be hoping it becomes a success.
