Tesla Issues Recall for Electric Semi Truck Mere Months Post-Launch

Tesla has announced a recall for its all-electric Semi truck just three months after its release. The recall, which is voluntary, is due to an issue with the electronic parking brake valve module. This defect might prevent the parking brake from engaging properly, potentially causing the vehicle to move unexpectedly when the driver expects it to be stationary. Thankfully, there have been no reported crashes, injuries, or fatalities as a result of this problem.

The recall affects only 35 Semi trucks. However, without production data from Tesla, it’s unclear what percentage of the produced trucks are impacted. Given that the trucks have been on the road for just a few months, there is a possibility that most or all of the current Semi trucks could be affected, though this remains unconfirmed.

Tesla will replace the faulty component at no cost, and owners should receive notification letters by May 23. Semi owners who want more information can contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752 and reference the recall number SB-23-33-001.

The all-electric Semi truck was initially announced by Tesla in 2017. After facing several delays, production finally began in the fall of last year. Elon Musk personally delivered the first Semi at a special event in December 2022 at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility near Austin. Pepsi was the first customer, ordering 100 trucks, with other companies like Walmart, UPS, DHL, and Anheuser-Busch also placing orders.

The Semi features a streamlined design and can accelerate to 60 mph in 20 seconds even when fully loaded to its 80,000-pound capacity. The 300-mile range model starts at a base price of $150,000, while the 500-mile range version starts at $180,000.
