The Genesis Neolun Concept: A Tradition-Inspired Electric SUV Masterpiece

Luxury SUVs often follow a common formula: lots of leather, a top-notch audio system, and comfortable seat massagers. However, the Genesis Neolun, an electric vehicle (EV) concept introduced just before the 2024 New York Auto Show, aims to break the mold for what a flagship SUV can be. This new model from the Korean brand offers a fresh perspective.

The Neolun, like many traditional SUVs, is not a small vehicle. Instead of trying to disguise its size, the designers chose a straightforward and clean design. They drew inspiration from traditional Korean moon-shaped porcelain jars, resulting in smooth surfaces that give the electric SUV a unique, almost vintage look. The car features sleek lighting accents reminiscent of Tron, limited chrome details, and large, Maybach-style wheels.

A notable feature of the Neolun is the absence of a roof pillar between the doors. While this might pose a challenge for passing side-impact crash tests, it creates a spacious and elegant entry and exit experience, enhanced by rear-hinged coach doors, reminiscent of classic luxury cars.

The Neolun replaces conventional climate control with traditional Korean ondol radiant heating. This system warms the floor and door panels instead of circulating hot air, which could potentially be more energy-efficient and extend the vehicle’s range in colder conditions.

To create a more homely atmosphere, Genesis has rethought the interior layout. When the car is parked, the front seats can swivel, opening up more space in the back. The central display screen can be repositioned for better visibility, allowing all passengers to enjoy movies. Additionally, a rear screen can drop down from the ceiling, similar to the feature in the BMW i7.

While detailed specifications for the Neolun haven’t been disclosed, it’s speculated that the production version might use the same E-GMP platform as the similarly-sized Kia EV9. Genesis plans to bring this innovative SUV to market “sooner rather than later,” though a precise release date has yet to be announced.
