While American companies like Waymo and Cruise are concentrating on ridesharing services with their self-driving vehicles, Dubai is looking to push the boundaries by integrating this technology into police patrol cars. Recently, Dubai Police shared their intention to use fully electric, autonomous patrol cars in residential areas, as reported by local news outlets.
These robocars can continuously patrol for up to 15 hours on a single battery charge. They are equipped with advanced security features, including a 360-degree camera and facial recognition technology. Additionally, they use artificial intelligence to detect suspicious behavior.
However, don’t expect to see these vehicles engaging in high-speed chases. They have a top speed of just 4.35 mph (7 kph). If the autonomous car detects something suspicious, it will send an alert to Dubai Police’s Command and Control Center, which can then dispatch a human officer.
Developed by 65 engineers over five years, this vehicle includes a drone with a camera that can capture aerial footage of specific locations. Fareed Al Jawhari, a spokesperson for Micropolis Robotics, explained to the Khaleej Times that the vehicle’s mechanical system is entirely custom-made. Each wheel has its own steering, braking, and throttle system, allowing the car to move in multiple directions and perform unique maneuvers silently.
Although the autonomous police patrol car still needs more testing, it is expected to be operational by this time next year, according to Micropolis Robotics.
Dubai Police is renowned for incorporating high-tech solutions in their operations. Years ago, they introduced their first robocop, which was more for assisting with directions than dealing with serious crime. They also boast a fleet of supercars to navigate the city in style.
Similarly, Dubai’s paramedics have flashy vehicles, and local firefighters use water-powered jet packs that can be launched from Jet Skis.
