The electric vehicle (EV) world is really booming right now. High-quality EVs are becoming more affordable, and even budget-friendly EVs are getting better. While we still have a way to go before EVs are truly affordable for everyone, that goal is starting to seem achievable. However, not everyone is looking for just a good car at a fair price. Some people are in the market for luxury and are willing to spend extra for that experience.
If that sounds like you, then you might want to check out the Mercedes-AMG EQE.
It’s important to note that the Mercedes-AMG EQE isn’t for everyone. In fact, it’s not even for most people. It caters to a specific, smaller group. Despite its AMG branding and being part of Mercedes’ high-end “EQ” line, it is less expensive than the EQS but still gives you about 90% of what the EQS offers.
I’ll skip over the exterior details because, honestly, it’s just okay. Like other Mercedes electric cars, it has a rounded nose that isn’t particularly attractive, though the rest of the exterior design is decent, especially with the 21-inch wheels on the review model I drove for the past week.
But let’s get to the heart of the car’s appeal: the interior.
The seats are incredibly comfortable, featuring soft-touch materials, ample padding, and many adjustment options. They can heat, cool, and even massage you. I personally enjoyed the red seatbelts, which added a nice pop of color.
Most of the interior exudes luxury as well. I’m not a huge fan of the matte silver plastic often found in luxury cars today, including the EQE, but overall the materials felt robust and high-end.
The technology inside is also top-notch. While the EQE doesn’t have the expansive Hyperscreen found in the EQS, it does have a large center screen and a digital instrument cluster. As the driver, I didn’t miss the Hyperscreen at all. Without comparing side-by-side with an EQS, the displays in the EQE appeared just as high-quality, bright, and vibrant. Plus, the ambient lighting in bright colors looks fantastic at night.
The driving experience is quite luxurious too. In typical Mercedes fashion, the steering isn’t the most responsive, but the car makes up for it with impressive acceleration, which is what you’d expect from an EV boasting 617 horsepower.
The overall feel of driving the car is part of its charm—it’s like navigating a speedy cloud. It can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 to 3.4 seconds, depending on the model. My wife even compared it to a rollercoaster.
The excellent performance is standard for an AMG vehicle. AMG is renowned for its high-performance cars, and this is its electric variant.
The Mercedes-AMG EQE isn’t cheap, but it’s more affordable than the EQS. Still, it shows you don’t need to break the bank to enjoy a supremely luxurious car.
There are some trade-offs when choosing the EQE over the EQS. The most significant is probably the driving range. The EQE has a 210-mile range, whereas the AMG EQS offers 277 miles.
You might also want to consider the non-AMG versions of these cars. The AMG EQE starts at around $107,000, while the standard Mercedes-Benz EQE starts at about $75,000. Compared to the $105,000 price of the Mercedes-Benz EQS and $148,000 for the AMG EQS, the EQE brings a lot to the table.
It’s also worth mentioning that there are other excellent luxury EVs available, like the BMW i7, which even includes features like a TV screen for passengers. However, my personal favorite remains the Mercedes-AMG EQE, and I think you won’t be disappointed with it either.
