Elon Musk, the head of Tesla, recently shared a photo of himself driving a “production candidate” Cybertruck at the Tesla Giga Texas facility. He mentioned in a post that he had just driven the vehicle there.
Originally announced four years ago, the Cybertruck has faced numerous delays. However, in April of this year, Musk committed to a delivery event in the third quarter, which should be announced any day now if he follows through.
In July, Tesla posted a photo showing the first Cybertruck to come off the production line at their Giga Texas factory in Austin.
While the upcoming delivery event will see the first batch of Cybertrucks handed over to customers, Tesla has indicated that mass production won’t start until 2024. This means that many customers will have to wait a bit longer to get their vehicles.
Earlier reports suggest that Tesla has received over 1 million preorders for the Cybertruck, with each customer placing a refundable $100 deposit.
The pricing details for the electric pickup are still up in the air. The pricing was previously listed on Tesla’s website but was removed in late 2021 for unknown reasons. The initial pricing ranged from $39,900 to $69,900, depending on features like the number of electric motors, towing capacity, and range. While many expect that the final price will be higher, Tesla’s recent trend of cutting prices to stay competitive means the final pricing could go either way.
The long-term success of the Cybertruck is still uncertain. Even Musk seems to be mixed in his expectations. For instance, he recently expressed high optimism by saying the Cybertruck feels very futuristic. However, a couple of years ago, he acknowledged that its unique design could mean the vehicle might not be successful. Currently, he remains very positive, indicating that he believes the Cybertruck might be Tesla’s best product yet.
