Genesis Ignites Excitement with the GV60 Magma Concept

Within a short span of just eight years, Genesis has emerged as a strong contender against luxury brands that have been around for centuries. However, it has lacked a performance sub-brand comparable to BMW’s M division, Mercedes-AMG, or even Hyundai’s N division. That’s about to change, and their plans also involve performance electric vehicles (EVs).

Just before the 2024 New York Auto Show, Genesis unveiled its new performance line named Magma, which will roll out high-performance versions of its existing models. The name ‘Magma’ is inspired by the bright orange paint that will be emblematic of this line. This vivid color was showcased on a special version of the Genesis GV60 electric SUV, along with the gasoline-powered G80 sedan and the GV80 Coupe SUV.

The GV60 Magma certainly captures attention, not just because of its eye-catching color. Genesis has equipped it with classic performance features like fender flares, a lowered stance, a wider front air intake, and a rear spoiler. It also sports more subtle enhancements, such as front canards and roof fins to optimize airflow, and 21-inch wheels specifically designed to help cool the brakes.

Despite the clear focus on performance, Genesis has been tight-lipped about the vehicle’s specifications. For the GV60 Magma to make a mark, it would need to surpass the 483-horsepower of the current GV60 Performance model. This seems attainable given the GV60’s Hyundai E-GMP platform, which has already proved capable of much higher power outputs in related models. For instance, the Kia EV6 GT boasts 576 hp, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N goes up to an impressive 641 hp.

Genesis aims to offer more than just raw power with the GV60 Magma. According to Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis’ chief creative officer, the brand wants to deliver a more refined driving experience that focuses on the joy of driving rather than solely on performance metrics.

Although the GV60 Magma is officially a concept car, it is expected to hit showrooms in the near future. Donckerwolke mentioned that it is “very close to production,” though he did not specify a launch date. If the GV60 Magma can achieve for performance EVs what the Genesis GV70 has accomplished in the luxury car market, competitors will likely be hoping for some delays in its release.
