BMW’s top-of-the-line electric vehicle, the i7, made its debut last year, and it created quite a buzz with its impressive blend of performance and luxury. However, many enthusiasts were eagerly anticipating the “M” package version, which finally arrived in April. Recently, we got the chance to experience this enhanced model firsthand to see just how much the motorsport package elevates BMW’s most luxurious car.
On paper, the specs are impressive. The i7 M70 xDrive, as it’s officially known, features an all-wheel-drive setup with two powerful motors. The rear motor is BMW’s most powerful yet, delivering 483 horsepower. Combined with the front motor, the total output reaches 650 horsepower, making it the most powerful battery electric vehicle (BEV) that BMW currently offers. But it’s not just about the numbers; real-world driving performance is what truly matters.
When it comes to the M package on a BMW, buyers usually fall into two categories. Some are genuine motorsport fans who want to boost their sedan’s performance and enjoy a spirited driving experience. Others opt for the package to showcase their luxury vehicle with the extra investment of roughly $20,000.
For those in the second group, the i7 M70’s interior might be underwhelming. It doesn’t have the flashy elements typical of traditional M packages. There’s a special display on the infotainment system, subtle M-colored stitching on the steering wheel, and standard-looking seat belts without the usual stripes. Visually, you’d have to look closely to distinguish it from a regular i7.
On the exterior, the M package adds more noticeable features. You’ll find M badges on both the front and rear of the car, along with unique trim elements like a distinctive rear splitter. The front kidney grille now features a glowing outline, although this design choice might be polarizing.
Choosing an M package for a 7 Series has always been somewhat unconventional. The 7 Series is known for its luxury and smooth ride rather than sporty handling. This sentiment is even stronger with the i7. The performance of the standard i7 models is already exceptional. The i7 xDrive60, for instance, offers 536 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 4.5 seconds. Even the more affordable i7 eDrive 50 is no slouch, with 449 horsepower and a 0-to-60 time only 0.8 seconds slower than its all-wheel-drive counterpart.
For everyday driving, the difference in performance between the standard i7 and the M70 may not be easily noticeable, leaving some to question the additional cost. This is in contrast to other M models, like the upcoming i5 M60, which delivers a distinctly different driving experience.
However, there are a few standout features in the i7 M70 that might tip the scales. One significant addition is all-wheel steering. Given the large size of the i7, this feature is particularly useful. The rear-axle steering system adjusts the wheels by 2.5 degrees, significantly improving maneuverability. The turning circle of the i7 M70 is just 40.3 feet, slightly better than the more traditionally sporty 5 Series. Combined with various sensors and driver aids, navigating tight spaces and city streets becomes much easier.
Another notable feature is the M-Boost button located to the left of the steering wheel. This button lets you tap into the full power of BMW’s most potent electric motor for short bursts. It transforms the i7 M70, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 3.5 seconds, delivering supercar-like performance from a large, luxurious vehicle.
In the standard i7, passengers might prefer lounging in the back with its massage seats, “cinema mode,” and top-notch suspension, rather than driving it. However, the M package adds an element of fun for the driver. With the M70, you retain all the luxury and comfort of the regular i7 but gain an edge of excitement and sportiness, making the driving experience just as appealing as being a passenger.
