Tesla Model S and Model X: How to Determine Which Model Best Fits Your Lifestyle

The Tesla Model S was the pioneer of cool electric cars, with its sleek design and impressive speed. However, there’s another high-end Tesla vehicle that’s also quite fast and provides a lot more space: the Tesla Model X. The Model X maintains Tesla’s stylish design and powerful electric motor, plus it includes some unique features you won’t find on other Teslas.

That doesn’t make it better than the Model S; it’s just different. So which one fits your needs better? Let’s take a closer look at the differences and similarities between the two cars.

The most noticeable difference is their design. The Model S is a smaller sedan, while the Model X is marketed as an SUV, though it’s more like a crossover. Essentially, the Model X is much larger than the Model S.

Both cars share Tesla’s minimalistic design language, evident across all its models. They feature slim headlights at the front and back and have a glass roof that offers a clear view from inside. Even though their design is aging, they still look great.

The Model X has some unique design features, like its distinctive “gull-wing doors” that open upwards instead of outwards. This creates a larger opening, making it easier to get in and out of the car and adjust things like baby seats. Plus, it looks cool.

Despite these neat features, the Model X’s design isn’t radically different from the Model S. So, it’s a tie in terms of exterior design.

Winner: Tie

Inside, both cars are quite similar, apart from the obvious extra space in the Model X. They both feature a minimalist approach with sleek dash lines and hardly any physical controls for climate and media. You can choose between a traditional steering wheel or a steering yoke in both models.

As expected from a Tesla, tech is a major highlight. Most controls are integrated into the infotainment system, including A/C. While some appreciate the clean dashboard, others prefer traditional knobs. The infotainment system also gives access to built-in maps, media controls, and apps like Netflix (while charging). However, both lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you’ll rely on Tesla’s software.

Additionally, both cars offer Tesla’s autonomous tech, but you’ll need to pay extra for advanced features beyond lane-centering and adaptive cruise control.

Given their similar approach to interior design and technology, this is another tie.

Winner: Tie

When it comes to performance, both the Model S and Model X are top-tier electric cars, known for their immediate response times.

As of now, the Model X comes in two versions: a standard Model X with dual-motor all-wheel drive and a Model X Plaid with a tri-motor setup. The standard version goes from 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, while the Model X Plaid achieves this in just 2.5 seconds.

However, the Model S is quicker. The standard Model S accelerates to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and the Model S Plaid does it in a remarkable 1.99 seconds, making it the fastest production car currently available.

Winner: Tesla Model S

Tesla doesn’t have the longest range among electric cars— that honor goes to the Lucid Air—but its cars are still top contenders. The Model X offers a range of 348 miles in the standard version and 333 miles in the Model X Plaid.

The Model S surpasses that with the Model S Plaid offering 396 miles and the base Model S reaching an impressive 405 miles.

Both models can charge at up to 250 kilowatts, which is relatively quick, even though some cars like the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 charge faster. A Supercharger can replenish their batteries in about 30 minutes.

Winner: Tie

Pricing also sets these two models apart. The base Model S starts at $71,090, while the Model S Plaid costs $86,090. The Model X is a bit pricier, starting at $76,090, but the Model X Plaid shares the same $86,090 price tag as the Model S Plaid. So, if you’re considering the Plaid version, your choice comes down to whether you want more space or faster speed for the same price.

Because the base Model S is less expensive than the base Model X, it wins this round.

Winner: Tesla Model S

Though the Tesla Model S is faster and cheaper, that doesn’t mean it’s the clear choice for everyone. You should base your decision on how much space you need rather than just speed. Both cars are very fast, but if you need more room, like for a family, the Model X is probably the better option. If space isn’t a big concern and you’d like to save some money, then the Tesla Model S might be your best bet.
