Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck will finally start hitting the roads this summer. During an earnings call with investors, Musk confirmed that the official delivery event for the unique electric pickup truck is scheduled for the third quarter of this year.
However, Musk also mentioned that the ramp-up to large-scale production of the Cybertruck would likely not happen until 2024. He explained that setting up the manufacturing process for such a radically different vehicle takes time because it’s not assembled like typical cars.
Details regarding the pricing and specifications for the Cybertruck will be shared closer to its launch or at the delivery event itself. Tesla had previously removed pricing information from its website at the end of 2021. At that time, the estimated prices ranged from $39,900 to $69,900, depending on the model’s features such as the number of electric motors, towing capacity, and range. It’s expected that the final pricing will be higher.
Earlier in the month, Musk shared that he had spent several hours on the Cybertruck production line at the Giga Texas facility, describing the experience as “awesome” and futuristic. Yet, he acknowledged back in 2021 that the Cybertruck’s unconventional design could pose risks, admitting that there was a possibility it might not be well-received.
Tesla first unveiled the Cybertruck in 2019, with initial plans aimed at achieving volume production by the end of 2021. However, this timeline slipped to early 2022 and then was delayed again. This is not Tesla’s first postponement with vehicle launches; the electric Semi truck, which finally rolled out in December, also faced significant delays.
Reports indicate that Tesla has received over 1 million preorders for the futuristic Cybertruck. Customers are currently required to pay a refundable $100 deposit, and Tesla is still accepting orders through its website.
