The Lucid Gravity Boasts Unparalleled Range Among Electric SUVs

The Lucid Air is an impressive electric vehicle, boasting greater range, performance, and advanced technology compared to any other electric car currently available. Despite its accolades, being a sedan limits its appeal in a market primarily dominated by SUVs. This is where the Lucid Gravity comes into play—a seven-passenger, three-row SUV set to launch in 2024, designed to attract a broader audience.

The Gravity is a logical next step following the Air’s debut. Having established itself with the sedan, Lucid can now leverage that recognition and excitement towards a vehicle that caters to a larger segment of consumers. However, developing a true SUV brings its own set of challenges. To accomplish this, Lucid had to make the Gravity heavier and less aerodynamic than the Air, which impacts the efficiency that the sedan is known for.

Even with these compromises, Lucid claims the Gravity will offer 440 miles of range. Although this is less than the Air’s 516-mile maximum range, it remains higher than any other current electric vehicle, SUV or otherwise. A drag coefficient of 0.24 contributes to this efficiency, making it better than the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV’s 0.26 and on par with the Tesla Model X.

Despite its focus on aerodynamics, the Gravity doesn’t skimp on passenger and cargo space. The second row features sliding seats with built-in tables, and the third row offers ample legroom. With both the second and third rows folded down, the Gravity provides 112 cubic feet of cargo space, complemented by a spacious frunk that doubles as a bench for tailgating thanks to its low lip.

The interior features a 34-inch curved OLED panel, serving both as the instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen. Below this main screen lies a smaller one with additional touch controls, similar to what’s found in the Air. Lucid introduces its next-generation software in the Gravity, offering continuous over-the-air updates to enhance the vehicle throughout its lifecycle.

While Lucid has yet to disclose the exact horsepower, they have revealed that the all-wheel drive Gravity can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. It also boasts a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds and a payload capacity of 1,500 pounds. An optional air suspension system will provide some off-road capabilities, and the 900-volt electrical architecture shared with the Air allows for ultra-fast charging, adding up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

Complete pricing details will be announced closer to the production start date in late 2024. However, Lucid is targeting a base price of under $80,000. This positions the Gravity within a competitive market of electric luxury SUVs, including offerings from Mercedes, Tesla, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, and Rivian. Despite the competition, none of these rivals can match the Gravity’s range or charging speed.
