Car manufacturers are in the midst of a significant transformation. While some are just adding electric engines to existing models, many are taking this shift to EVs as a chance to completely overhaul their entire lineup, both inside and out. Take the EV6, for instance; it’s a design that Kia wouldn’t have had just five years ago.
While the new exterior designs of these electric vehicles are exciting, it’s the interiors that truly enhance the driving experience. Lots of companies are making impressive changes, but in my opinion, Kia has really nailed it with the new EV9. Other manufacturers should take note.
The Kia EV9 finally offers wireless CarPlay, making it one of the first from Hyundai Motor Group to support wireless connectivity. This means you can just hop in, place your phone on the accessible wireless charging pad, and you’re good to go—no need to fiddle with cables.
If you prefer wired charging, the EV9 has you covered there too. There are two USB-C ports at the front, with one featuring a button that switches between charging and data connectivity. Plus, there are additional USB-C ports for second and third-row passengers, ensuring everyone can charge at least one device.
Considering this is a family car designed for road trips, these features are incredibly useful. Second-row passengers benefit from a large storage bin that doubles as a table, and there are cupholders for everyone, especially in the premium version with second-row captain’s chairs instead of a bench seat.
Comfort is where many carmakers excel, and it’s arguably the most crucial part of a car’s interior. The Kia EV9 stands out with its plush, padded seats that offer excellent lumbar support and easy adjustability. Heated and cooled front seats come standard, and these features extend to the second-row captain’s chairs, depending on the trim. The car also has three climate zones, with second-row passengers having control over the third zone.
The front climate controls are user-friendly too. Unlike the EV6, the EV9 includes some physical climate controls. There’s a dedicated display for these controls, though partially blocked by the steering wheel. However, there are paddles within easy reach for both the driver and front passenger to quickly adjust temperature and fan speed, allowing more detailed adjustments on the display when needed. This system is fantastic because you can see which fans are active and make swift changes without navigating a touch screen.
None of these features are groundbreaking or revolutionary. Kia hasn’t introduced any radical new technology or fundamentally changed what makes a great car interior. Instead, they’ve combined all the essential details into a comfortable, enjoyable cabin. Other carmakers can easily replicate this without needing to design an SUV. It’s all about intuitive climate controls and practical features like cupholders and USB-C charging ports. Of course, more space allows for extras like storage bins and ample legroom, but modern technology should now be a standard inclusion in any car interior.
